More on Sakakawea:

Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman known for her role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, has had her name spelled and punctuated in various ways. The different spellings include "Sacagawea," "Sakakawea," and "Sacajawea."

These variations arise from different interpretations of the Hidatsa and Shoshone languages, which did not have written forms at the time. "Sacagawea" is believed to derive from the Hidatsa language, meaning "Bird Woman," while "Sacajawea" and "Sakakawea" are other interpretations of the same name. The diversity in spelling reflects the challenges of translating Native American names into English.

Sakakawea is one of America’s most famous people as she was the youngest adult member and the only woman on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Her great contributions to the Corps of Discovery’s grueling journey to the Pacific Coast as guide, interpreter, food gatherer and care giver from Fort Mandan to the Pacific and back have rendered her the most celebrated woman in American history. Sakakawea was the first woman ever inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame ina 2001 induction ceremonyr.
