The Strains That Infertility Can Put On A Marriage

A couple who has been unsuccessful in their attempts to conceive a child for over a year are struggling with infertility, says Dr. Carol Tanksley. Carol is a personal coach and licensed OB-GYN with more than thirty years of helping couples walk through the difficult journey of infertility. She explains that only one third of infertility cases are centered on medical issues with the mother. One third are male-factor reasons, and another third is a combined factor between both the male and the female. Carol shares what kind of jobs are likely to contribute to male-factor infertility and highlights how important lifestyle factors and stress can be when a couple is hoping to get pregnant.

Most recent Improvements in Fertility Treatment:

Over the past three years, there have been significant advancements in the field of fertility medicine, contributing to a more dynamic and evolving landscape in infertility treatment. These developments encompass a range of new technologies, diagnostic techniques, and treatment strategies.

  1. Emerging Technologies in IVF: One of the notable advances includes the introduction of INVOcell technology, which allows IVF-created embryos to be incubated in a device placed inside the woman’s body before transfer to the uterus. This approach not only has the potential to make IVF more affordable but also allows for a more natural incubation environment for the embryos.
  2. Advanced Data Analysis and Precision Medicine: The integration of advanced data analysis in fertility treatment has been transformative. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are increasingly being used to analyze large data sets, enabling more precise and personalized treatment approaches. This is particularly significant in addressing challenges like repeated implantation failure in IVF treatments. For example, the endometrial receptivity test, which examines genetic material in endometrial cells, helps in identifying the optimal time for embryo transfer, thereby increasing the chances of successful pregnancy.
  3. Innovations in Embryo Screening: Genetic screening of embryos, such as Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT), has become more sophisticated, allowing for the detection of a wide range of genetic diseases and traits. New advancements in polygenic testing are enabling the identification of complex traits influenced by multiple genes, offering deeper insights into embryo health and potential.
  4. Lab-Grown Eggs and Fertility Preservation: A significant breakthrough has been the development of lab-grown eggs, or in vitro gametogenesis. This technology, which involves maturing human eggs outside the body using ovarian tissue samples, holds immense potential for women with reduced ovarian function or diminished ovarian reserve. Additionally, the growing popularity and accessibility of egg freezing as a form of fertility preservation offer women the opportunity to plan their pregnancies more flexibly.
  5. Hormonal Treatments for Improved Fertility: Research on the use of the fertility hormone DHEA has shown promising results in improving uterine receptivity, particularly in older women. This hormone treatment has been found to increase certain protein levels associated with successful implantation, thereby potentially enhancing the success rates of IVF treatments for women over the age of 40.
  6. Non-Invasive Techniques for Egg Quality Assessment: The use of polarized light technology has emerged as a non-invasive method to evaluate egg quality during IVF procedures. This technique allows for the assessment of meiotic spindle morphology in oocytes, which can serve as a predictive marker of fertilization success and embryo development.

These advancements reflect a combination of technological innovation and a deeper understanding of human fertility, offering new hope and options for individuals and couples facing infertility challenges. The field continues to evolve, with ongoing research likely to yield further breakthroughs in the near future.
