Glennon Engleman seemed like an ordinary man working in dentistry, but over the course of two decades, he manipulated close relationships and used those around him to carry out a chilling murder-for-profit scheme.
Engleman’s trail of terror began in 1958 with the shooting of James Bullock, the husband of his ex-wife. From there, a disturbing pattern began to unfold—insurance payouts followed mysterious deaths. Eric Frey, a friend helping him build a drag strip, ended up at the bottom of a well loaded with dynamite. In 1976, Peter Halm was shot, and Halm’s wife—who knew Engleman since childhood—collected $75,000 in insurance and gave a portion to Engleman.
The crimes escalated. Engleman carried on an affair with Barbara Boyle, whose husband Ron Gusewelle and his parents were all murdered. Boyle walked away with nearly $200,000. Then, in 1980, dental technician Sophie Barrera was killed by a car bomb after threatening to take Engleman to court over unpaid debts.
The case finally broke open when Engleman’s third wife, Ruth Jolly, worked with police to record his confessions. His own words sealed his fate, leading to multiple life sentences.
