To win, a candidate must secure a majority of the votes cast by the members present and voting. Normally, this magic number is 218, a simple majority of the 435 House members. However, this number can vary slightly, as seen in the 118th Congress, where it was 217. If no candidate achieves the necessary majority, the House continues to vote until a Speaker is elected, which can sometimes result in multiple rounds of voting.
