Kodama Systems, a forest management startup based in Sonora, California, has devised an innovative approach to combat climate change: burying dead trees to prevent their carbon from entering the atmosphere. Operating since last summer, the company recently garnered attention with a $6.6 million investment from Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures and other investors. Additionally, Stripe has awarded Kodama and its research partner, the Yale Carbon Containment Lab, a $250,000 research grant to support a pilot project in the Nevada desert, aimed at studying the effectiveness of this biomass burial method in curbing greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative is part of Stripe’s broader strategy to counteract corporate climate emissions, moving beyond traditional carbon credit purchases.
Kodama's concept taps into the natural carbon-absorbing abilities of trees, which release this carbon when they decay. By burying tree remains, Kodama aims to prevent this release, offering a simpler and potentially cheaper alternative to other carbon reduction methods.
