The 30 by 30 initiative aims to protect 30% of Earth's land and oceans by 2030. This idea was first proposed in a 2019 article titled "A Global Deal for Nature: Guiding principles, milestones, and targets" in the science journal Science Advances. The article emphasized the urgent need to increase nature conservation to help fight climate change. Following this, the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People began promoting the initiative in 2020, and by early 2021, it had garnered support from over 50 countries. This number increased to more than 100 countries by late 2022.
In September 2021, the initiative received a significant boost with $5 billion funding for a project called the "Protecting Our Planet Challenge."
